Brine Shrimp Hatching Care Guide

Brine Shrimp Hatching Care Guide

Benefits of feeding Brine Shrimp

Feeding live brine shrimp (nauplii) provides superior nutritional value for aquatic life, as newly hatched shrimp retain a rich yolk sac packed with protein and essential fatty acids that promote rapid growth. Their energetic, swimming movement stimulates natural hunting instincts, encouraging timid or newly introduced fish to feed. Measuring less than half a millimeter, baby brine shrimp are an ideal size for fry, micro-rasboras, and reef invertebrates. Unlike non-living foods that break down and pollute the tank, live brine shrimp stay alive until consumed, preventing ammonia and nitrate spikes while naturally boosting fish coloration through their rich carotenoid content.

Setup & Water Preparation

  • Container: A clean glass or clear plastic container (1-2 liters works well) or a dedicated cone hatcher.

  • Salinity: Mix 1.5 to 2 tablespoons of non-iodized salt (marine salt, rock salt, or kosher salt) per 1 liter (1 quart) of dechlorinated or distilled water.

  • pH: Aim for an alkaline pH of 8.0 to 8.5. If needed, add $1/4$ teaspoon of baking soda per liter to raise the pH.

Environmental Conditions

  • Temperature: Keep water between 26°C and 28°C (78°F–82°F) for optimal hatch rates within 24–36 hours. Lower temperatures delay hatching up to 48 hours.

  • Aeration: Use an air pump with an airline tubing fixed near the bottom to keep the eggs suspended. Keep flow gentle so eggs swirl constantly without excessive foam.

  • Light: Provide a continuous light source (LED or ambient lamp) for the first 12 hours to trigger the hatching mechanism.

Hatching & Harvest

  1. Add approximately 1/2 teaspoon of brine shrimp cysts (eggs) per liter.

  2. Turn on aeration and light; wait 24 to 36 hours.

  3. To harvest, turn off aeration for 5–10 minutes. Unhatched eggs will sink to the bottom, empty shells will float to the top, and live baby nauplii will cluster in the middle near light.

  4. Siphon the orange nauplii out using an eye dropper or siphon tube, and strain them through a fine mesh net before feeding to fish.

Feeding & Ongoing Care

  • Do not feed baby brine shrimp during the first 24 hours (they live off their yolk sac).

  • After day 2, feed tiny amounts of active dry yeast, spirulina powder, or specialized liquid fry food 1–2 times daily.

  • Feed only what they can consume in a few hours to keep the water clear; clear water indicates it is time to feed again.
